CHOOSE YOUR ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAIN

The CX-70 and CX-90 are available with two different hybrid powertrains. Explore the difference between Mild Hybrid (MHEV) and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) and find the powertrain that fits your journey.

Small battery plus fuel nozzle.

WHAT IS AN MHEV?

The Mild Hybrid powertrain combines combustion engine performance with EV technology to support a refined driving experience. Energy recovered by a compact lithium-ion battery helps reduce CO2 emissions while preserving the familiar feel of fuel-powered performance.

  • No charging is required
  • Electric-assisted performance
  • Improved fuel efficiency
Big battery plus fuel nozzle.

WHAT IS A PHEV?

Plug-In Hybrids bring together combustion and electrification with a larger battery, enabling longer all-electric driving when charged. With seamless switching between gasoline and battery power, drivers can enjoy confident performance on longer journeys and at higher speeds.

  • Chargeable battery
  • Electric-only driving capabilities
  • Maximum fuel savings

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Find answers about Mazda electrified powertrains, PHEV ownership, available incentives and the PHEV Saving Guide.

Cold temperatures can reduce electric range and may cause the gasoline engine to operate more frequently to support cabin heating, battery conditioning and vehicle performance. Actual range and energy use vary with temperature, driving conditions, climate-control use, charging habits and other factors.

The CX-70 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid models are engineered with safety as a priority. Available i-Activsense safety features are designed to help increase driver awareness, support collision avoidance and help reduce the severity of certain collisions. The high-voltage system also includes safeguards designed to shut off power in the event of a collision. Feature availability and operation vary by model and trim. Always refer to the Owner’s Manual for important limitations and details.

The calculator provides an estimate of potential fuel savings when comparing a selected Mazda Plug-In Hybrid with a gasoline-powered vehicle, based on the information and assumptions entered.

No. Results are estimates only. Actual costs and savings vary based on driving conditions, charging habits, energy prices, weather, vehicle configuration and other factors.

Eligible CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV GS-SC trims may qualify for a federal EV rebate of up to $2,500. Quebec offers up to $1,000 on eligible GS-SC, GS-L SC and GT trims. Manitoba offers up to $4,000 on all CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV trims. Eligibility, amounts and program availability are subject to change.

Yes. Available drive modes allow the driver to manage how the vehicle uses its electric motor and gasoline engine. Depending on the selected mode and driving conditions, the vehicle may prioritize electric driving, preserve battery charge or use both power sources together.

The high-voltage battery is covered by a limited warranty for 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first. Refer to the applicable warranty information for complete terms, conditions and exclusions.

A Plug-In Hybrid can support many shorter trips using electric power while retaining the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer journeys. Potential benefits may include reduced fuel use and tailpipe emissions, access to available government incentives, regenerative braking and responsive electric-motor torque. Actual ownership costs, savings, range and benefits vary by vehicle, location, energy prices, charging frequency and driving conditions.

Mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) both combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor, but they differ in how electric power is used and how the battery is charged. A mild hybrid uses a small electric motor and battery to support the gasoline engine. The electric motor does not typically power the vehicle on its own. Instead, it assists the engine in certain driving situations and can help improve fuel efficiency. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and does not need to be plugged in. A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor, allowing the vehicle to travel using electric power alone for a certain distance. The battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle into an external power source and can also receive energy through regenerative braking. When additional power or driving range is needed, the gasoline engine can operate alongside or instead of the electric motor.
