Taking Action with Overheating

If the following occur, the engine has overheated.

  • The high engine coolant temperature warning indication is displayed and the output suddenly decreases.

  • “Excessive Engine Coolant Temp. Stop the Vehicle in a Safe Location” or “Excessive Hybrid System Temperature. Output Limited” is displayed on the multi-information display.

  • Steam is escaping from the engine compartment.

Do not open the hood while steam is escaping from the engine compartment.

If the hood is opened while the engine compartment is hot, steam and scalding hot coolant may shoot out and cause serious injury. In addition, even if steam is not escaping, some parts in the engine compartment may remain at high temperature. Be extremely careful when opening the hood.

Do not touch rotating parts such as the fan or belt when inspecting inside the engine compartment.

Working near the cooling fan when it is running is dangerous. The fan could continue running indefinitely even if the hybrid system has stopped and the engine compartment temperature is high. You could be hit by the fan and seriously injured.

Do not remove either cooling system cap when the hybrid system and radiator are hot.

When the hybrid system and radiator are hot, scalding coolant and steam may shoot out under pressure and cause serious injury.

The high engine coolant temperature warning indication is displayed or “Excessive Engine Coolant Temp. Stop the Vehicle in a Safe Location” is displayed on the multi-information display.

  1. Drive safely to the side of the road and park off the right-of-way.

  2. Shift into park (P).

  3. Apply the parking brake.

  4. Turn off the air conditioner.

  5. Check whether coolant or steam is escaping from the engine compartment.

If steam is coming from the engine compartment:

Do not go near the front of the vehicle. Stop the hybrid system.

Wait until the steam dissipates, then open the hood and start the hybrid system.

If steam is not coming from the engine compartment:

With the hybrid system operating, open the hood and allow the hybrid system to cool.

Make sure that the cooling fan is operating and stop the hybrid system when the high engine coolant temperature warning indication turns off.

If the cooling fan does not operate while the hybrid system is operating, the engine temperature will increase. Stop the hybrid system and call an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

  6. When cool, check the coolant level.

If it is low, look for coolant leaks from the radiator and hoses.

If you find a leak or other damage, or if coolant is still leaking:

Stop the hybrid system and call an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

    1. Cooling system cap

    2. Coolant reservoir

    3. Cooling fan

    4. Radiator

If you find no problems, the hybrid system is cool, and no leaks are obvious:

Carefully add coolant as required (Search).

If the hybrid system continues to overheat or frequently overheats, have the cooling system inspected. The hybrid system could be seriously damaged unless repairs are made. Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

“Excessive Hybrid System Temperature. Output Limited” is displayed on the multi-information display.

  1. Drive safely to the side of the road and park off the right-of-way.

  2. Shift into park (P).

  3. Apply the parking brake.

  4. Turn off the air conditioner.

  5. Stop the hybrid system, open the hood and cool the hybrid system.

  6. After the hybrid system has cooled sufficiently, check the coolant amount.

If it is low, look for coolant leaks from the radiator and hoses.

If you find a leak or other damage, or if coolant is still leaking:

    Call an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

If you find no problems, the hybrid system is cool, and no leaks are obvious:

Carefully add coolant as required (Search).

  7. After at least 5 minutes have elapsed since the hybrid system was stopped, start the hybrid system again and check if the display on the multi-information display has disappeared.

If the display does not disappear, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

If the hybrid system continues to overheat or frequently overheats, have the cooling system inspected. The hybrid system could be seriously damaged unless repairs are made. Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
